Thinker Moments

June 2, 2022Why is mental health being spoken about so much these days? Personally, I feel that it is because we have shifted from viewing mental health as just the absence of mental illness to, rather, being about thriving and living our life to our fullest potential. One of the ways that I have found to do this is by creating a mental health haven at home. For me, it’s about capturing and creating that feeling of peace and safety when I walk in my front door. Often, especially after I have been travelling for a few days I walk into my home and pause, I take a deep breath and a wonderful peace comes over me as I walk into a space that I love. It has taken time and intention to create a space that feels this way & it hasn’t always been there but after carefully changing and adjusting my space I now have a beautiful mental health haven at home.
- Himalayan Salt lamps. These create a beautiful soft light that is calming to the mind & soothing to the eyes. Using the red light that these lamps emit keeps us more in sync with our circadian rhythm and prevents the disruptions that blue light creates.
- Candles & scents. I love candles. For both the calm light and the beautiful scents that they emit. The association of certain scents with my home means that as soon as I walk in the door, I know I am back home. Scents are grounding and tie us to the present moment.
- Wooden furniture and green plants. I love bringing the outside in, using earthy and natural materials in my home as much as possible to ground and calm.
How can you change one thing to move your home towards a haven?
