People or Technology?

I was asked recently, what is more important for the future of the success of our business? Is it people or tech? While one can make good arguments for the importance of both components, I believe that without the right people any technology implementations will fail. But with the right people, you will find the right technologies and they will push you to embrace the changes that are needed within the organisation.

In his book, Good to Great, Jim Collins often talks about the importance of having the right people on the bus (or in the business). We know how unpredictable the world we live in is and as a leader we consistently need to be re-evaluating where we are headed. The reality of business is that the destination is forever changing and moving, what counts is who we have on the journey with us. If, as a team we are aligned on our values and our core purpose then we will then be aligned on our journey regardless of whether the destination or the technological tools need to change along the way.
